5.0 out of 5 stars Love It, April 7, 2010
Plenty has been said already about how surprisingly big this thing is and how well it cools, but wanted to add my thoughts on the install. After reading some of the reviews I was a bit worried that it would be a handful, but honestly it’s a snap. I don’t know if they’ve changed the brackets or the manual or both, but it was very clear which brackets to use for socket 1366, and there’s really nothing at all to installing it, other than the obvious step of removing the mobo which would definitely be a bummer for a retrofit. I was installing a new mobo at the same time, so it was really just a matter of setting the board on edge, passing the cooler through, backing it up with the plate and screwing it on. Literally just minutes. Also, fits easily in my Antec 902, with just a little trimming on part of the side panel.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great Air Cooler for the price, April 3, 2010
I put this on my i7 920 and have it OC’d to 4.035. I ran LinX for 20 cycles then ran Prime95 for 24 hours and the temperature peak in LinX was 82C and Prime95 was 76C. Real world gaming temps max in the low 60s and idle is in the 30s. Not too bad for air but could be a bit better as my case is large and well ventilated.

I have heard there are a few better air coolers out there like the Prolimatech Megashadow, but for the price I am in no mood to take this out and replace after sweating blood to get it installed.

As others have mentioned, this is difficult to install. The directions are unclear so you need to do a little trial and error which does not help things.

I am subtracting one star for temps about 5c higher than my target, bad instructions, and difficult install – But once installed, it sure looks great.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best Heatsinks to date!, March 29, 2010
I looked up several reviews from online computer blogs and computer wholesalers, and found that for most part, reviews for the V8 were very positive. In several of the blogs, it ranked in the top 10 in several instances as the all time best air coolers, despite the fact this model is several years old now.

Installation might be difficult. If you built your computer, it probably won’t be too much of a problem for you then. However, it will require you to physically remove the motherboard from your computer case, because the V8 is screwed down onto the motherboard.

It also comes with the ability to adjust the fan via a little turn knob, which can be set up in the back of your tower. The V8 is cooling an overclocked AMD Phenom II x3 Triple Core, overclocked at ~3.6 ghz with the fourth core unlocked. At minimum, my idle temps were ~45C and stress temps hit a maximum of 65C at once. At the maximum rpm settings, the idle temp was ~39 with a stress hitting a maximum of 61C.

I got a great deal off of my V8, and bought it for $[...] with free shipping from [...]. At that price, it cools amazing and it’s definitely worth an upgrade if you are not seeing the numbers you want from your system.

I also recall some reviews warning you about shaking your tower, because someone reported their V8 falling off while in use. I’ve found that it seems quite secure, and there is little movement. I do caution you handle the tower with care, just with any other over-sized cooler heat-sink.

5.0 out of 5 stars CPU Never Ran Cooler, March 22, 2010
I built a computer based on the i7 and the cpu fan that came with it was junk. My cpu was constantly overheating. I started researching and I saw this and decided to give it a try. Now my computer is running the best it’s ever ran. Installation was a pain. i had to take my mother board off the case to attach the rear plate that holds the thing down. As you can see from the pictures this thing is HUGE. I have the Cooler Master Cosmos 1000 case and there isn’t much room between the top of the V8 to the side panel. If you got enough room in your case for this I highly recommend it.
